Sri Lanka has two monsoons that affect different sides of the island at different times, so there is no single best month. The right time for a group tour depends on where the route goes.
December to March: south coast and hill country
This is generally the driest period for the west and south coasts and a popular time to combine the Cultural Triangle, the hill country and the beach. It also falls within the main whale watching season in Mirissa, which runs from about November to April.
April to September: the east coast
The south-west monsoon brings more rain to the west and south, typically from May, while the east coast is usually at its best.
August and September: elephants
The elephant gathering at Minneriya National Park usually peaks around August and September, though herd sizes depend on rainfall each year.
October and November: the changeover
These months are often wetter as the monsoons change. Showers can be heavy but are not always all day, and weather varies from year to year.
Tips for choosing a departure
- Check which regions the itinerary covers before choosing a month
- Allow for rain at any time of year, especially in the hills
- Ask for current departure dates early if your holiday dates are fixed
