Minneriya National Park – This park is home to an extraordinary diversity of wildlife and is known for its large elephant gatherings. It boasts nine species of amphibians, 24 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles, 26 species of fish (three of which are endangered), 75 species of butterflies, and 160 species of birds.
Sigiriya Rock Fortress (World Heritage site) – Built in 477 AD, this "fortified and well-planned" city fortress atop Sigiriya rock is an astonishing achievement. A palace and a complex of gardens were constructed on the 3-acre summit, serving as a royal citadel for 18 years.

Elephant Orphanage Pinnawala – This orphanage, nursery, and captive breeding ground for Asian elephants houses the largest herd of captive elephants (*Elephas maximus maximus*) in the world. The orphanage was originally established to protect elephants that were injured or abandoned in the jungle, making it one of the best family adventure activities in Sri Lanka.
Royal Botanical Garden Kandy – A recommended activity during your Sri Lanka family holiday. First conceived as a Queen's pleasure garden in the 14th century and later a residence for a Kandyan Prince in the 18th century, the gardens were formally opened in their current form in 1821. Stroll through these tranquil, immaculately designed lawns, borders, pavilions, and plant houses.
- Check out from the Kandy hotel and leave for Nuwara Eliya.
- Take a train ride from Kandy to Nanu Oya Station (close to Nuwara Eliya), subject to seat availability. Reservations must be completed at least one month prior to the train journey.
- Alternatively, you can travel by car to Nuwara Eliya and visit a tea factory en route.
- Enjoy a leisurely afternoon.
- Optional visit to Horton Plains National Park. Please note that this involves a 7 km walk on uneven steps through a misty, cool climate, where you may witness World’s End, Baker’s Falls, and many other natural attractions. This is a recommended excursion, but ensure you are healthy enough to walk 7 km in temperatures of 10-15°C.
- Enjoy sightseeing in Nuwara Eliya and spend quality time at Gregory Lake.
Nuwara Eliya is a town in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, known for its picturesque landscape and temperate climate. It is located at an altitude of 1,868 m (6,128 ft) and is considered the most important location for tea production in Sri Lanka. This city was initially developed by the British as their holiday centre during the colonial period, and it still resembles a little England today, with most of the buildings reflecting typical British architecture.
