THE STORY BEHIND THE LANDSCAPE

Ravana, Lanka & the Ramayana.

In the Ramayana, Ravana is the powerful ruler of Lanka who takes Sita from Rama. Hanuman reaches Lanka in the search for her, and Rama’s journey leads to the struggle to bring her home.

Interpretations differ. Sri Lankan traditions also remember Ravana as a learned king and devotee of Shiva. These layers of storytelling give the trail its depth: devotion, place and memory are encountered together.

We distinguish the epic and local beliefs from established history. Ravana-linked place names and temple traditions are not presented as archaeological proof of events or a single agreed historical route.

TEMPLES, LEGENDS & LANDSCAPES

Places to shape your Ramayana trail.

Not every route visits every site. Start with your most meaningful places, then balance the journey with road travel, worship time and rest.

CHILAW

Munneswaram & Manavari

These temples feature in Sri Lankan traditions about Rama’s worship. Combine the nearby sites on a Chilaw visit; confirm access and any requested religious arrangements before travel.

RAMBODA

Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple

A hill-country temple dedicated to Hanuman. Plan it on the journey towards Nuwara Eliya, leaving time for worship and road breaks.

SEETHA ELIYA

Seetha Amman Temple

A devotional focus of the trail, associated by tradition with Sita. Visit respectfully and follow the temple’s current worship and photography guidance.

NUWARA ELIYA

Gayathri Peedam

A shrine included on many Ramayana trail journeys. Discuss whether it fits your devotional interests and the day’s temple arrangements.

NEAR WELIMADA

Divurumpola

Local tradition links this temple with Sita’s Agni Pariksha. It can fit the onward journey from Nuwara Eliya towards Ella.

ELLA

Ravana Falls & optional cave

Ravana-associated scenery adds another dimension to the trail. The cave is a separate optional visit with steps; access and suitability must be checked.

TRINCOMALEE

Koneswaram

Include this Shiva temple on the longer east-coast routes. Its Ravana associations belong to religious tradition; plan enough time for the journey.

SOUTH COAST

Rumassala · optional extension

A landscape linked in local tradition to Hanuman’s journey. Request it only where practical from your chosen coastal base; it is not included on every route.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Ramayana tour questions, answered.

Which Ramayana tour package in Sri Lanka should I choose?

Choose five days for a compact Chilaw and hill-country temple route, seven days to add Divurumpola and Ella, nine days for Trincomalee as well, or twelve days to extend the trail through Kataragama and Rumassala, with a coastal overnight. These are suggested private itineraries, with the final route matched to your flights, walking preferences and devotional interests.

Are these private tours, and where does pickup take place?

Request a private tour with airport or agreed Colombo/Negombo pickup. Share your flight details, hotel and group size so JK Travels Sri Lanka can confirm the vehicle, English-speaking driver and final pickup arrangements in the quotation. A licensed sightseeing guide is not automatically included.

What is included in the price?

Prices are on request. The written quotation states the agreed transport, accommodation and meal arrangements. Temple or attraction admission, donations, special worship services, guides, meals, personal expenses and optional activities are not included unless expressly listed. Do not assume all-inclusive pricing from the word package.

Can you arrange vegetarian meals and time for worship?

Tell us your vegetarian or other dietary requirements and preferred worship arrangements before booking. We will discuss suitable stops and request arrangements, but specific menus, kitchen practices, priests, pujas and temple access require confirmation rather than a blanket guarantee.

Is the Ramayana trail suitable for children or older travellers?

The route can be adapted around mobility, shorter walks and rest. Explain your group’s needs before booking. Hill roads and longer transfers need planning; Ravana Cave involves steps and is optional. Not every site has the same level of access.

Are the Ravana stories presented as verified history?

No. The epic, religious traditions and local interpretations are presented respectfully as such. A place’s association with Rama, Sita, Hanuman or Ravana does not by itself establish an archaeological identification. The Ravana portrait on this page is an AI-created artistic interpretation, not a historical photograph.

Are temple opening times and festivals guaranteed?

No fixed opening hours or worship slots are promised here. Access, religious observances, festivals and photography rules can affect visits. Confirm the final programme before booking and follow local instructions on the day.
