7-Day Sri Lanka Surfing Holiday – Weligama & Hiriketiya
This 7-day Sri Lanka surfing holiday follows the south coast in the November to April surf season. Spend three nights in Weligama, whose wide sandy bay has some of the most beginner-friendly waves on the island, then three nights at Hiriketiya, a small horseshoe bay with waves for improving and experienced surfers.
JK Travels Sri Lanka arranges your private airport transfers, the move between surf towns and any day trips. Surf lessons and board hire are booked locally with a surf school of your choice and paid separately, so you can surf as much or as little as you like.

Arrival and drive to Weligama

Meet your driver at Bandaranaike International Airport and travel south on the Southern Expressway to Weligama, about three to three and a half hours depending on traffic.
Check in near the beach, rest after the flight and walk the bay at sunset to see where the surf schools set up.

DAY 02
First surf session in Weligama Bay

Weligama’s sandy bottom and gentle, rolling waves make it a good place for a first lesson or to get back on a board. Book a morning lesson or board hire locally; mornings are usually calmest.
Keep the afternoon for rest, a swim when conditions allow, or a return to the water at the evening session.

DAY 03
Surf, or whale watching at Mirissa

Surf again in the morning, or swap one session for whale watching. Boats leave Mirissa harbour, about 15 minutes away, early in the morning during the whale season, roughly November to April.
Finish the day at Coconut Tree Hill in Mirissa or back at Weligama for sunset. Whale watching tickets are paid separately and sightings are never guaranteed.

DAY 04
Move east to Hiriketiya

After breakfast, transfer about 45 minutes along the coast to Hiriketiya near Dickwella. The bay has a reef break on one side and a beach break on the other.
Check in, watch the line-up from one of the beachfront cafés and plan your next sessions with a local surf school.

A full surf day at Hiriketiya

Surf the morning glass, rest through the midday heat and paddle out again later in the afternoon. Ask the surf school which side of the bay suits your level.
Evenings in Hiriketiya are relaxed, with sunset over the bay and dinner close to the beach.

Surf or explore the coast
Silent Beach near TangalleCoast near Tangalle
Take one more session, or ask your driver for a short trip along the coast: the quiet beaches around Tangalle are about 40 minutes east, and Dondra Lighthouse marks the southern tip of Sri Lanka.
Return to Hiriketiya for a final evening by the bay.

Return to the airport

Check out and drive back to Bandaranaike International Airport, about four hours using the expressway. Pickup time is set around your flight.

Are surf lessons included?
No. Surf lessons and board hire are booked locally with a surf school and paid separately. We arrange the private transfers and can suggest when and where to surf.
When is the surf season on the south coast?
The south coast is best from about November to April. From May to September the surf moves to the east coast, where Arugam Bay is the main spot.
Is this suitable for beginners?
Yes. Weligama has gentle, sandy-bottom waves that suit first-timers, and Hiriketiya has waves for improving surfers. Choose lessons that match your level.
Can we change the number of nights?
Yes. This is a private itinerary, so you can add nights, stay in one town only, or add sightseeing before or after the surf days.
