The Galle Fort, also known as the Dutch Fort, is a historic fortification originally built by the Portuguese on Sri Lanka's southwestern coast.

The initial structure, constructed in the late 16th century, was relatively simple, but it was extensively modified by the Dutch in the 17th century.

These changes transformed it into one of the most significant archaeological, architectural, and historical monuments showcasing European influence in Southeast Asia from the 16th to 19th centuries.

UNESCO recognized the site as a World Heritage Site, citing its unique representation of an urban ensemble that reflects the interaction between European architecture and South Asian traditions during that period, meeting criterion four for such recognition.
