A safari landscape becomes richer when your attention includes birds near water. You do not need a long species list to begin. Looking at shape, position and behaviour gives a useful alternative to repeatedly asking whether a large mammal has appeared during the wildlife portion of your Sigiriya day trip.

Sri Lanka Tourism identifies Minneriya Reservoir as habitat for waterbirds including painted storks and spot-billed pelicans. These are background examples, not a promised checklist for your visit.

Describe a bird before naming it
Notice the outline of the bill, the length of the legs, the body shape and how the bird holds itself. Record the habitat and relative size if you cannot identify it. A short accurate note is better than a confident wrong name. Do not label a bird solely from a distant colour patch or a photograph of another location.
Look at how it uses the space
Watch whether a bird stays near the edge, moves through open water or changes position. Describe the action without assuming you know its purpose. Binoculars can help if used comfortably from the jeep. Keep equipment contained and give other passengers room to watch; a birding interest does not justify leaving the permitted position for a better view.
Let identification continue after the safari
Keep uncertain records marked uncertain and compare them with reliable material later. If specialist bird interpretation matters, request it separately before booking rather than assuming it comes with road transport. The goal for a general visitor is attention, not a perfect list. A single well-observed bird can add a different memory to the combined cultural day.
