Minneriya Safari Sri lanka
Minneriya National Park
Minneriya National Park, also known as Minneriya Safari Sri Lanka, was established on August 12, 1997 (Gazette Notification No. 988/4). It is one of Sri Lanka’s most visited national parks, making it an ideal destination for wildlife holidays and family adventure trips. The park covers an area of 8,890 hectares and includes the former Minneriya–Giritale Sanctuary, Minneriya–Giritale Nature Reserve (Blocks I, II, III, and IV), and Sigiriya Sanctuary.
Located in the district of Polonnaruwa (PulathisiPura) in the North Central Province, Minneriya is positioned in the heart of Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle. It is renowned for its remarkable elephant gathering, which is one of Asia’s premier wildlife experiences. Additionally, Minneriya National Park is one of the 70 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in Sri Lanka, making it a recommended destination for birdwatching tours.
Biodiversity and Conservation
Minneriya National Park is recognised as one of the most important ecosystems in the dry zone of Sri Lanka for the long-term conservation of elephants and their associated flora and fauna, according to biodiversity conservationists. It is bordered by Wasgamuwa National Park, Riverine Nature Reserve, Flood Plains National Park, Kaudulla National Park, and Somawathiya National Park, creating significant landscape-scale conservation opportunities in the Dry Zone. The main entrance to the park is located next to the Habarana-Polonnaruwa highway.
During the dry season, Minneriya serves as a feeding ground for elephants migrating from the forests of the Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee districts. Visiting during this season offers an unforgettable wildlife experience, contributing to a remarkable holiday in Sri Lanka.
Accessibility and Attractions
Minneriya is approximately a 4-5 hour drive from Colombo’s main city and is close to several local attractions. For instance, Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is only 20 kilometres away. Habarana and Sigiriya are also nearby, enabling visitors to combine cultural trips with wildlife holidays. The park’s topography consists of scrub plains, mixed evergreen forests, rocky outcrops, and marshes, providing diverse habitats for various wildlife.
Minneriya Safari Tours
During the dry season from June to September, around 300 elephants gather near the old Minneriya water tank. This is the only place in Sri Lanka where such a large herd of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus maximus) can be observed in one location. This gathering is listed by Lonely Planet among the Top Ten wildlife spectacles in the world. A jeep safari tour of Minneriya National Park is highly recommended to experience this incredible wildlife event, making it a highlight of family adventure holidays in Sri Lanka.

The park was reopened on 27th February 2010 which had been closed to the public for nearly 20 years during the civil conflict in Sri Lanka. Due to the war the area suffered a lot. Substantial amount of time, parts of the frontline ran through or near the park. As a consequence, the management was severely disrupted, and the park staff and many animal populations suffered. Now the park infrastructure and management are being rehabilitated and the wildlife is almost recovered.
No mobile signals are available in Minneriya National Park. Signals are jammed purposely by the government to enhance the experience of wildlife enthusiasts
