first kingdom of sri lanka

Polonnaruwa Kingdom, or the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa, was the second capital of Sri Lanka for three centuries between the 11th and 13th centuries after the destruction of the Anuradhapura Kingdom in 993. It is located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. Due to its archaeological prominence and ancient technological superiority, UNESCO declared Polonnaruwa a World Heritage Site in 1982 under the name of the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa.

History of Polonnaruwa Kingdom

Polonnaruwa was the first declared capital city by King Vijayabahu, who defeated Chola invaders in 1070 to reunite the nation under a local leader. During the reign of the great King Parakramabahu, who ruled from 1153 to 1186, significant advancements were made in rice cultivation through the construction of a massive irrigation network with reservoirs resembling inland seas. Sri Lanka became known as the Granary of the Orient. Polonnaruwa consists of ruins from the glorious kingdom of King Parakramabahu, with the richness and glamour of this kingdom still evident today. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa remains one of the best-planned archaeological relic sites in the country, standing as a testimony to the discipline and greatness of the kingdom’s first rulers.

The Great King Parakramabahu

The era of King Parakramabahu is considered the Golden Age of Polonnaruwa. Trade and agriculture flourished under the king’s patronage, who was adamant that no drop of rainwater should be wasted and that every drop should contribute to the development of the land. As a result, irrigation systems far superior to those of the Anuradhapura era were constructed during Parakramabahu’s reign—systems that still supply the necessary water for paddy cultivation during the scorching dry season in the east of the country. The most significant of these systems is the Parakrama Samudra, or the Sea of Parakrama.
